This was a fun and disconcerting page to draw. I had orginally drawn this page with the full nudity intact in Chuck’s Buck Rogers-y fantasy, but pulled back for the regular version, as even though I enjoyed drawing it, it made me uncomfortable at the same time. I even omitted the uncut nude version from the printed collection. Use of the word “WHORE” scrawled on the locker was a bit unsettling when I first drew it, too, but I feel it’s important to grow as both a writer and an illustrator by doing things that make you uncomfortable. Sure, it was in MY original outline and Wade’s script featured it prominently, but as both editor and illustrator I serve as the last line of defense, protecting the world from mine and the scripter’s words and ideas. Still, I wanted this story to have as much emotional impact as possible and I guess it helped along that path.
I believe this is the first direct interaction between Chuck and Hailey, and yes, Hailey is one the girls in his fantasy. The first hint at a secret, unrequited attraction to her? Guess you’ll have to just wait and see.
