In a possible future, Hailey takes on the mantle of the Shepherd. How does it happen? You’ll just have to stay tuned to find out.

Meanwhile, in the parallel universe of evil…
I’m starting to think I should make a Pin-up out of panel 3.

And back to the girls fighting! Wade and I have resolved that in future issues all fighting will be done by girls in short skirts. Just kidding. Or am I? Any thoughts? Would this drive up readership?
I had almost forgotten about Karen until this page. She originally had a much bigger part in this story, but my original outline would have made this story 2 or 3 issues long. And I really wanted it to just be one, since the next story is a two-parter. The old Doctor Who and the first few seasons of the Justice League have taught me much about multi-parter fatigue. I mean every bloody Justice League episode was a two- or three-parter whether there was enough story to justify it or not. Man, Dwayne McDuffie really re-energized that series (right before it ended).
Anyway, if anyone’s interested, much of the story we whittled away involved Hailey meeting her sister in the Dark Universe for the first time and her exploring what was so different about this universe that she had a sister here and not in the Prime Universe. Gail played a bigger role, watching over Hailey’s sister and many of the characters that will feature in the next 2 issues were going to be featured in the Dark Universe first. There was also a lot little vignettes of how everyone was spending their summer vacation and more of Jayce on the farm, being all emo and trying to relive his childhood.

I think this is the first thing I’ve colored by hand since middle school. I’m pretty happy with it except for the grass (damn Crayola markers crapping out). To see this and other non-comic illustration pieces I’ve done check out my DeviantArt Gallery.
